The spelling of Indigenous words and names varies.
They generally appear on this website according to conventions
of accepted usage and authoritative sources. In most instances,
artists’ dates and language groups have been supplied by
the artists and/or verified by appropriate community sources. Wherever
possible, the artists’ own preferences in the spelling, use
and order of placement of their names has been sought.
Words such as ‘half-caste’ are historical
terms avoided in contemporary usage. These words have been used
in quote marks to directly quote an individual or to correspond
with the terminology of the period.
Dimensions of works are given in centimetres (cm),
height preceding width followed by depth.
